- 6eb1aba1-169c-428e-b964-60df42f93e4f description "Terrestrial organisms are being exposed to a number of anthropogenically-induced environmental stresses as a consequence of climate change. However, in most places on our planet vegetation thrives: this phenomenon, known as "greening Earth", is noticeable from satellite. But in certain areas at high latitudes, and especially in the Arctic regions, where plants also prospered at first, it was recently observed what is qualified as "browning". So far Arctic vegetation had managed to adapt and survive in harsh environmental conditions characterized by long periods with snow, low levels of ambient light and cold temperatures followed by a short period with warmer temperatures when life explodes. Now, plants are facing different challenges related to winter warming. Basically, snow insulates organisms and soils against climatic extremes (coldest temperatures, desiccating winds, ice blasts) and provides a flush of nutrients and water in spring. Under winter warming, snow thaw increases, with frequent temperature excursions above 0C providing conditions warm enough for physiological activity to start, until normal winter temperatures return. Without snow cover protection, organisms exposed to warm temperatures suffer permanent damages, in particular frost drought: unable to extract liquid water inside the still frozen soil, plants literally die of thirst. Subsequent re-freezing of the snow melt (and any rainwater) results in ice-encasement of the vegetation and anoxia, further damaging the tissues and reducing accessibility to insects and herbivores (in particular reindeer). Repeated freeze-thaw cycling and damages have significant impacts during the growing season, reducing carbon uptake, growth and productivity. Ultimately, the ability of ecosystems to fix carbon is reduced, transforming the Arctic from carbon sink into another carbon source." assertion.
